Challenges of Development Group
Cognitive and Mental Issues
Anxiety disorders affect 40 million adults in the U.S age 18 and older. Anxiety disorders develop from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events. People with severe mental illness can expect to lose more than 25 years off of their lives due to the illness. Young adults with these type of mental illnesses can develop other health issues such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, cancer, and high blood pressure among other health conditions as well. To cope with the issues young adults need a strong psycho-social support team in school and in their community to promote mental health.

Physical Health Issues
Young people from both low and high-income countries face obesity which is another form of malnutrition. Young adults can expect to face vision problems, changes in their endurance level, metabolism changes, and muscle strength decreases. Having an adequate nutritional diet including healthy eating and physical exercise can promote good health in adulthood.

Major Diseases
Globally, there are more than 5 million young adults living with HIV/AIDS. In the year 2009, 40% of all new HIV infections were among 15 to 24 year old young adults. The second most highly reported sexually transmitted infection (STI) is chlamydia which tends to go unnoticed since there often times are no symptoms. In 2011, 15 to 24 year old young adults made up 4 times the reported chlamydia rate. Also, in 2009 young African Americans accounted for 65% of HIV infections reported among 13 to 24 year old. HIV disproportionately affects young gay/bisexual men and young African Americans. Young people should know how to protect themselves from acquiring the virus by getting tested every year and practicing safe sex.
